It is not common for us at Guate360 to post bilingual entries. When we do; it is done with the awareness that we have a global audience utilizing us as one as the best internet resources covering culture, tourism and current events in Guatemala.
Just recently I came across a news release from Expedia Inc, a worlds leader in the travel and tourism industry. Together with United Nations Foundation Expedia will focus energy and resources to promote sustainable tourism, economic development, and promotion of world heritage sites and communities.
The agreement is inclusive of education and promotion of world heritage sites utilizing several of their travel brands. They will offer World Heritage Trips with proceeds from the trips used to support the United Nations Foundation initiatives, matching donations of up to $50,000 dollars to support locally owned tourism enterprises in World Heritage destinations and the donation of employee time and talent to develop sustainable locally owned and managed tourism business at the selected sites.
For us in Guatemala this represents a great opportunity for global exposure and a much needed boost to local economies. From Antigua Guatemala to Tikal we are privileged to have World Heritage sites that cater effectively to tourism offering unique opportunities to experience history, nature and archeology.
For the world, Expedia will open a window to new destinations beyond traditional travel expectations. World Heritage Sites have the potential to educate us, enlighten us and challenge us to see our planet with a different and renewed perspective.
