La Monja Blanca, tiene como nombre científico Lycaste Virginalis, es una planta epifita (epi = encima, fiton = planta), lo cual significa que vive encima de otras plantas, existe en la Zona Reina, es decir, en Alta Verapaz, esta planta es una de las 35,000 especies de la familia de las orquídeas, de las que cabe resaltar, es una de las más numerosas de la Naturaleza de Guatemala presentando una característica que resalta de este tipo de plantas, el llamado pseudo bulbo, el cual consiste en el engrosamiento del tallo, sirviendo así como almacenamiento de agua, se desarrolla, generalmente, en los bosques húmedos de los lugares mencionados anteriormente, en la altitud de 1400 a 1800 metros sobre el nivel del mar con diversas temperaturas, incluso llega a soportar los 0°c durante muy cortos períodos de tiempo; asimismo requiere de una cantidad muy baja de luz para estar bien cultivada.
Debido a la belleza de la planta se empezó a comercializar llegando al extremo de que fue tanto el comercio que se dio que hacía 1935 se exportaban barcos enteros hacia diferentes partes del mundo, sin que hubiese una legislación que la protegiese de los constantes saqueos de los Bosques Vírgenes de las Verapaces. Fue hasta el año de 1946 cuando hubo una legislación que prohibió su extracción de la Naturaleza de Guatemala, debido a estos actos su reproducción a disminuido en gran número, y esto debido a que para reproducirse necesita de millones de semillas que se producen en su fruto, las cuales llevan en su interior un pequeño embrión, y necesitan un tipo de hongo para germinar, es aquí donde se justifica su escasez.
La Monja Blanca fue elegida Flor Nacional de Guatemala gracias a la idea de la Sra. Leticia de Sutherland, presidenta de la Exposición Internacional de Flores, la cual se celebro en Miami Beach, Florida, en 1933, su cooperación fue enviando al gobierno guatemalteco la sugerencia de que La Monja Blanca fuera nombrada Flor Nacional, esto debido a su belleza, paz y arte, cosas simbolizadas en ella y que la llevaron a ser declarada Flor Nacional, el 11 de febrero de 1934, por Decreto Presidencial del General Jorge Ubico.
